No access to cultural activities or art education.

Violence , in many cases related to addictions. Codes of violent communication between children, adolescents, and adults, which interfere with the learning of social skills: mutual solidarity, care of the environment, citizenship, etc.

These neibourghoods are considered by the State as marginal , making reference to the high crime rate .

Discrimination from the general population towards these groups .

These factors seriously obstruct the positive integration of these youngsters; we also encounter low academic levels and poor grade promotion .
Moreover, it is possible to observe, in the age group between 12 and 18 years, a high percentage of drop-outs, as well as decrease in school performance among those who still manage to stay in the system.

Program objective and description

Artistic expression in general, and music in particular , constitute an excellent means to attract youngsters to the Project. The Program aims to generate positive changes that will allow them to improve their present and future life conditions and their positive insertion in Society.
It is well-known that music is a key factor to develop, in a thorough way, their personality and to awake and develop perception skills, communication, self-discipline, self confidence, creativity, sense of responsibility, aesthetic sensitivity, team work, memory, attention, discipline, concentration, willingness, analysis, synthesis, as well as to provide them with values and principles that are necessary to acquire and reinforce from an early age.

The Project works towards the achievement of a clear and concrete purpose the constitution and development of a Children Orchestra.
The musical instruction and the insertion of these children in the Orchestra, constitute a strategy to achieve the above-mentioned goals
From a social point of view, an Orchestra conformed by children at risk, will allow us to have a broader conception of what concert theaters are for, opening their doors to the community as a whole
It should also help transform conventional limits regarding gender, adult-youngster relations. Each local project affects a total of 600 persons minimum, involved in different activities.
It also calls for a great participation from the community leaders and local press to increase the effect and impact of the Project.

Specific Objectives

Participants in the Project will benefit from it by achieving these goals:

Developing musical abilities and skills that allow them to play the instruments that will eventually constitute the Orchestra.

Improving their norms of daily social behavior and incorporate behaviors and social kills based in values and principles that favor their positive integration in the Project and in society.

Reducing the number of drop-outs and improving their school performance.

Strengthening family and community ties.

Raising their self-esteem and strengthen resilient aspects.

Improving their nutritional condition.

Participating in artistic, social, and formative activities that open new horizons towards a future of development.

Creating awareness to the rest of the community, and society in general, about their right to cultural access , through their achievements and actions.

Obtaining by this means a working tool that will make a difference in their lives; the orchestral training provides the beneficiaries with a tool for early professionalization.

Project's Theoretical Reference Frame

The compliance of CISMAL s mission, involves a strong pedagogic work, to achieve favorable behavior modifications for the beneficiaries
This pedagogic work takes as key reference the Resilience approach, in Social Studies referred to ability to face up , a rebirth from adversity, to adapt, to recover and to have access to a meaningful and productive live (ICCB, Institute on Child Resilience and Family, 1994).

OSJM.
